How do you lug your luggage?
What sort of luggage do you prefer? A Bag? Backpack? Suitcase on wheels? Wearing layers? Stuffing pockets?

The measurements matter, and the weight might be important. Please check limitations with your airline. I recommend using a scale and a tape-measurer. Make sure the size and weight is ok, they will check! Then deceide the category, within CARRY ON:

How to lug...
What is your personal taste: What sort of luggage do you like to bring? What is convenient for you? Do you have special physical strengts or limitations. That could guide your choice of luggage. Popular luggage versions are the following: Bag, Backpack and Suitcase. There are even more alternatives...
THE CARRY ON SUITCASE
Are you strong enough to lift 10 kilo over your head to get your little suitcase into the overhead compartment? If not, you should not bring it. It is risky to count on personel or other friendly travellers. If you are strong enough and have long enough arms and Legs, then this is the most spacious piece of luggage. Due to the corners, it maximizes the measurements, that is why I usually prefer suitcases. The ones with four wheels, a so called "spinner" is my favourite. Usually the airlines will charge you a fee for bringing the carry on suitcase on board, depending on your ticket. When I broke my arm and had operation on my shoulder, this option was out for me when I traveled alone. The spinner will give you one hand free. If you move your other hand from the handle, please pay attention to your suitcase!
THE BAG
There is at least one bag in every home. They come in a wide selection of materials and sizes. Generally a bag is lighter than a suitcase, no wheels and no metal. The shoulder strap is essential for carrying-comfort. I see mostly men carrying bags. An advantage is the supleness. It is soft. You will usually be able to press the bag into the predefined space at the boarding area. This must be tested at home, beforehand. With the bag on your shoulder, you will have one hand free, and maybe you can use the other one as well.
THE BACKPACK
Yes, trendy again! Many models are designed for travel; maximising packing and unpacking functionality. With a backpack you have both hands free. The weight will be divided on both shoulders and on your back. A good design is essential, especially if it is a bit heavy. Disadvantage might be that you do not have eyes in your back. I got pick-pocketed this way.
THE WEAR-IT-ALL
Rather ridiculous, but I have heard of people layering up all their clothning. Maybe putting underwear and a toothbrush in the pockets?
THE GARMENT BAG
A few airlines specify if you can bring a garment bag, what measurements it should have, and if it is to be charged or not. It is a nice way to have your attire under control.
